Notes about St George Church burial ground

This brick built church was built in Tudor times and was very simply presented inside. It was a favourite of the poet John Betjemen. Unfortunately it burned down after a lightning strike in October 2013 and the photographs show what remains. It is not possible to enter the church now, but the graves are still there. The location is very remote and the only access to the graveyard is by a track over farmland. The name Goltho is reputed to be Saxon for ‘where Marigolds grow’. It no longer exists as a hamlet, but there are parish records available for the church when it was part of a wider area community of people from nearby Wragby and Rand among others.
