William Dawson | 1896 | 69 | 1827 | first name on monument | h of Jane William DAWSON married Jane LOWE in 1853 in Ormskirk District: they lived in Lathom, William, born in Rufford, was the son of JANE, but the 1841 Census shows Jane, his mother, already widowed and married to another; James ARNOLD, a farmer at Moss Lane, Lathom. William is seen here also in the 1851 census. When he married Jane LOWE they were at Hall Lane and William was a farmer of just 4 acres. Then in 1861 they had taken 21 acres at Lyons Farm, Skelmersdale. The severe depression of the late 1870's and throughout the next decade probably foreced William to seek work in Industrial Lancashire, and in 1881 they were living at 31 Ralph Street, St Thomas, Halliwell and he was now a Carder and a Card Cutter and Changer in a Spinning Mill. by 1891 they were still at 32 Ralph Street and William was now a Bookkeeper and Local Preacher. He had always been a Methodist Lay Preacher, even back in his youth. After William's death in 1896, Jane moved across the road to 31 Ralph Street, her widowed son, Henry Dawson, moving in also. William and Jane had 10 children, Elizabeth, William, James, Jane, Thomas, Henry, Ellen, Alice, Margaret & George Lowe. son William died at 15yrs old, Margaret died as a baby. The rest survived into adulthood. Jane Dawson married John BINKS, son of John BINKS and Sarah Ann FITTON. John BINKS was the son of Reuben BINKS and Alice CLEGG. Reuben BINKS was the son of Robert BINKS and Jane DOWTHWAITE, both from Swaledale and Arkengarthdale in North Yorkshire. The BINKS family became settled in BOLTON and spread widely. |
