Reasons why the image for this memorial was requested

I must begin by letting you know that I am not a family member of the Smith clan, but have a rather unique connection to the subject. I am writing to request a closer look at this particular grave marker because I happened to buy an interesting miniature portrait of John Smith about 5 months ago here in the United States. How it ended up in my country I am unsure. The miniature was painted in 1822 by a very well-known portrait artist of the day named Frederick Cruickshank, when Mr. Smith was a young man of 25 years of age! I have been doing research on this man's life and have been able to locate photographs of his residence, Belevedere House, in North Yorkshire, as well as a bit of family history. I am more than happy to share my own photographs of the miniature, as well as the description hand written on the reverse of the portrait by his son chronicling his passing in 1866, for without that inscription I would never have been led here to your site.
