Baron Isidore Justin Sévérin Taylor Grand Officer Légion | 1879 | 90 | 1789 | first name on monument | Taylor was descended from a Belgian mother; Marie-Jacqueleine Walwein; from a notable family in Bruges; and an English or more likely Irish father; Hélie Taylor (c.1762-1830). Hélie was apparently born in England; but contemporary sources claim that he belonged to a distinguished Irish family. Heliés brother was General Taylor; a British general who moved his allegiance to France folllowing the failure of the attempted French invasions of Ireland in 1796-98. Whilst the general espoused the defence of Catholics in Ireland persecuted after the failed French invasions; Hélie was a philosopher who taught at Leyden University. Both brothers were naturalised as FrenchmenIsidore was an author; art critic and translator of plays; ennobled by Charles X of France in 1825. He also produced early productions of Dumas and Victor Hugo. In 1829 he began the process of transporting the obelisk from Egypt to the Place de la Concorde in Paris. In 1838 king Louis-Philippe sent him to negotiate the purchase of the paintings which form the Spanish gallery of the Louvre; and in 1869 he was appointed a senator. He founded numerous artistic associations; and the current Fondation Taylor in Paris is the result of this work. |
