Théodore Korab Morawski | 1879 | 82 | 1797 | first name on monument | Younger brother of Théophile Morawski; he was born in Kalisz. From 1818-1821 he co-created the first Polish newspapers to speak out against the Russina régime; and lost his job at the Polish Interior Ministry as a result. Arrested and imprisoned in 1825; he escaped to France and then England the following year. During the Polish uprising of 1830-1831 he wrote for the British press; and was appointed the agent of the rebel government to the French government; and returned to Poland. He escaped arrest by the Austrian forces in Cracow; and was elected to the Polish Diet; and became the Foreign Minister of the rebel government. He escaped from the siege of Warsaw in 1831; and returned to Paris. He was a leading Polish intellectual; and a member of several learned societies. |
