Purchased mansion house and lands of Bonnington; near Leith. Appointed Sherriff-Depute of Edinburgh in 1793. Inherited house and estate of Craighall-Rattray in Perthshire in 1799; through the relationship of his grandmother. Assumed additional surname of Rattray; which is did not use until 1816/17. Appointed a Baron of Exchequer in 1809. One of the 7 original trustees of St John's responsible for finding the money to purchase the site and build the church. Married on 3rd January 1791 to Jane Duff; she died on 6th July. They were the parents of 2 sons and 1 daughter. James died on 29th August; at Craighall-Rattray although he had been heavily involved in the life of Edinburgh and especially St. John's.
