Reasons why the image for this memorial was requested

Joseph and Mary Wharton were my great-grandparents, parents of my father's father. My father Arthur Basil is still alive aged 88 and lives in Helmsley. His father Arthur died at Selby in 1981 aged 97. It appears from your information that both Joseph and Mary died before my father was born in 1924. As a child I enjoyed many happy summer holiday visits to my grandfather's home in Liphook. At that time my home was near Selby. I was born at York in 1952, one of 2 children, my elder brother (now deceased) having been born in Wakefield in 1950. Many thanks indeed for your efforts and enterprise in creating this informative website.

Joseph Wharton is the father of my father's (Arthur Basil Wharton, born 1924) father (Arthur Wharton, born 1883). Joseph Wharton worked as a coal screener at Pope & Person's West Riding Colliery, later as a self-employed draper.
