William Reeves | 1994 | 81 | 1913 | first name on monument | William's full name was William Carter Reeves, the Carter for his paternal grandmother. He was born in Failsworth to Abraham Reeves and Polly Morgan. He had one sibling, a brother, Gerald George Reeves, 1918-1943. Bill (as he was known) joined the RA in late 1931, served in India before the war and then in Belgium & France (at Dunquerque) and then in the North African Campaign until its end, when he was sent home seriously ill. He worked as a Herdsman thereafter on different farms around England, the loss of his military career unsettling him permanently. He and Eveline (Eve) married in 1947. They had three surviving children. |
Eveline Reeves | 1995 | 75 | 1920 | wife of William Reeves | Eveline (Effie to her parents; Eve to Bill) was born in Port Sunlight, the elder of two daughters to Herbert Owen Rishworth and Ida Booth. Eve swam for her school (breaststroke), played the piano, loved dancing, the theatre and the countryside. She had dreamt of reading French at university and going to France, neither ambition coming to fruition. Instead she became a comptometer operator for Unilever (the place where her relatives worked). About 1941 she was called up into the ATS. She spent the war working in the Army pay office in Manchester, where she met Bill, in 1945. |
