He was killed in action at the Kink Front on 9 Jun 1916, serving as a 2nd Lieutenant in the 10th Service Battalion of the Cameronians (Scottish Rifles). He was buried at the Vermelles British Cemetery, Vermelles, Pas-de-Calais, Nord-Pas-de-Calais, France (Plot III, D, 20). Before joining the Army, he served an apprenticeship at the British Linen Bank in London.

Bert Tickner is one of at least nine children born to Harry Tickner and Annie Tickner nee Field in Cobham. Both parents died in 1907 and some of the children ended up in orphanages across the south east. Sibling Ernest born 1900 was sent to a home in South Darenth Kent. From there he joined the army and fought in WW1. He was killed in action aged 16/17. Bert survived WW1.
