1849791770first name on monumentBorn in Hirson in the Aisne region; Lefebvre came from a family of magistrates. He was commissioned in 1792 and sent to Pondichery; and was captured in 1793 by the British during the siege. When he was released; he was allowed to join his uncle who was Bishop of Adran and prime minister of the king of Cochinchine; and served as 'war mandarin' and commander of the engineers. Reclaimed by the British as a prisoner-of-war and destined for internment in England; he escaped after the capture of his prison ship and regained France; where he was appointed ADC to the new French commander in India; Decaen. He returned to India from 1803-1810; and escaped with the Decaen from the the siege of Mauritius; and continued to serve with Decaen in Spain in 1811-1813. In 1814 he was appointed general and head of the 2nd army of reservists in Paris. In January 1815 he was sent to Nimes; but he rallied to Napoléon during 'the Hundred Days'. He was charged with negociating with the Duc d'Angouleme; son of Louis XVIII; and subsequently survived an assasination attempt in Montpellier. He lived for several years on Mauritius after his retirement; and was the author of a Persian and Urdu dictionary and grammar. He was granted the honorary title of marshal in 1823.
