born in Killingworth in Northumberland joined the British army in 1779 and was posted to the West Indies in 1781 He served with Sir Charles Grey who recommended him to General Tonyn and Sir Ralph Abercromby Airey and Abercromby fought in the West Indies against the father of Victor Hugo Airey was then appointed deput-adjutant-general in Minorca where he came to the attention of General Henry Fox (brother of the politician) who took Airey to Ireland in 1802 where he met his wife Airey also accompanied Fox to Sicily in 1805 and was promoted to Major-General in 1812 and given command of the Ionian islands From 1813-21 he returned to Ireland as Quartermaster-General In 1821 he was promoted to Lt General and given command of the 39th Regt of Foot and awarded the Knight Grand Cross of the Royal Hanoverian Order in 1823
