Kieffer began his career as an interpreter for the revolutionary committees and was attached to the French Embassy in Constantinople in 1796 where he was imprisoned during Napoleon's invasion of Egypt From 1818-1829 he was interpreter for oriental languages for king Louis XVIII He was also Vice-President of the Asiatic Society and author of a Franco-Turkish dictionary He was a leading French Protestant Revivalist. He also edited and prepared the first Turkish New Testament to print in 1819. In 1827 he finished editing the Bible in Turkish (old and new testaments) and got it ready for printing. Thus the first Bible in Turkish to be printed bear his name, Kieffer's Bible, not the translator's (Ali Bey)
