Airey was born in Killingworth in Northumberland; joined the British army in 1779. and was posted to the West Indies in 1781. He served with Sir Charles Grey; who recommended him to General Tonyn and Sir Ralph Abercromby. Airey and Abercromby fought in the West Indies against the father of Victor Hugo. Airey was then appointed deput-adjutant-general in Minorca; where he came to the attention of General Henry Fox (brother of the politician) who took Airey to Ireland in 1802; where he met his wife. Airey also accompanied Fox to Sicily in 1805; and was promoted to Major-General in 1812 and given command of the Ionian islands. From 1813-21 he returned to Ireland as Quartermaster-General. In 1821 he was promoted to Lt General and given command of the 39th Regt of Foot; and awarded the Knight Grand Cross of the Royal Hanoverian Order in 1823.
