Gérard joined the army in 1787; and after the revolution began to rise rapidly through the ranks. He served in Germany; Spain and Russia (under Marshal Ney); but was taken prisoner after the battle of Dresden in 1813. After his release in 1814; he rallied to Napoléon; but was called back to active service after the Bourbon Restoration. He subsequently became ADC to King Louis-Philippe. His name is engraved on the north side of the Arc de Triomphe.
