Fifth son. The family of Swinton takes its name from the lands of Swinton; Berwickshire; which it held for more than six centuries. Joined Bengal Establishment of the Honourable East India Company in 1805; until he retired in 1833 after holding position of Chief Secretary of the Governor-General for 4 years the culmination of a distinguished career. Married in January 1820; to Jane; a relative; whose father also enjoyed a distinguished Civil Service career in India. They were the parents of 5 sons and 2 daughters. On his return to Scotland; George and his family moved into No.4 Atholl Crescent in 1835. All 5 sons had either civil service or military careers in India. So did 5 of George's brothers; 3 of his uncles and a cousin. George died at Atholl Crescent on 17th June; Anne Elizabeth died in June. Window was erected in July 1860 by his widow and second son.
