59OrdenerMichel Ordener1787751862id: PPLMicOrden32973311891The son of one of Napoléon's favourite generals of the same name; Ordener distinguished himself by his bravery and devotion to the emperor. Commissioned at the age of 15; he was appointed ADC to his father and escaped death at the battle of Austerlitz in 1806 when he was awarded the Légion d'Honneur at the age of 19. He then became ADC to Marshal Duroc; and in 1808 Duroc sent Ordener to announce the surrender of Baylen to Napoléon. He then served with Duroc in Spain and Austria; and was appointed a chevalier of the empire at the age of 22. He was seriously wounded in the Russian campaign of 1812 but continued to fight; and was appointed colonel at the age of 25. In 1813 he was promoted in the Légion d'Honneur; and and in 1815 he rallied to Napoléon. He fought at Waterloo and was sacked from the army for his loyalty to the former emperor. In 1830 with the fall of the Bourbons he was recalled to active service; and fought in Belgium; and was promoted to general the same year. In 1852 he was elected to the Senate.
Eugènie de Villaine1817891906 Josephine Eugènie Ordener was the eldest child of Comte Michel Ordener. Her first husband was General Comte Louis de Marolles (1808-1855); who was killed in the Crimean War at Sebastopol. Her second husband was Baron Etienne-Eugène de Villaine de la Villaine.

He worked for the firms of Otis and Holburn; and later Otis and Swan of New York. They had 2 daughters; Charlotte Downs Otis and Helen Otis.

She married Henry Sansom; head of the banking firm Sansom and Co; which failed in 1831. Her father and husband were friends of the artist Benjamin West.
Charles Magniac1824 Charles Magniac made the family's fortune by developing the family export business in China; Magniac and Co; which his brother Hollingworth Magniac eventually joined. After Charles' death in Paris en route to relatives in Switzerland; Hollingworth developed the family business and the firm contributed to the foundation of Jardine Matheson.

He was educated at Pemroke Coll Cambridge and in 1810 married Margaret Williams of Cromleech in Ireland. When his father died; he was forced to leave the Hertford family estates in Ireland and move to Brussels. His sons; born in Ireland; were Frederick Seymour who became Governor of British Columbia; and Gen.Sir Francis Seymour Bt.

He set out for a tour of Europe in 1827; and settled in Paris. He left his estate in the USA to a French lady; Marie Louise Charlotte Briel. Smith appears to have been well-connected. A letter of introduction exists for Smith and his brother; from one of the USA's greatest politicans Henry Clay; who was Secretary of State for War; to Albert Gallatin; the Swiss-American politican who was the US Treasury Secretary but also served as the American Ambasador in France and the UK.

71SmithWilliam Sidney Smith1764761840id: PPLSirSidSmith32971611741Napoléon wrote of Admiral Sir Sidney Smith; that man made me miss my destiny. Connected to the Pitt family; Smith was educated at Tonbridge School and joined the Royal Navy in 1777 and fought in the American War of Independence. He distinguished himself at the Battles of Cape Vincent in 1780; of the Cheapsake in 1781; and of the Saintes in 1782. Following peace with France in 1783; he visited France and undertook his first intelligence mission. From 1790-92 he served in the Swedish navy; and then joined the British fleet under Admiral Hood attacking Toulon in 1793. Despite his success at Toulon; he was blamed by Nelson; who grew to be jealous of his continued success over the years; for not destroying more ships at Toulon. He was captured and imprisoned by the French in 1796; but escaped. He then undertook a mission to Turkey (where his brother was ambassador) to stop Napoléon's advance. Elected MP for Rochester in 1802; he was believed to have had an affair with the wife of the Prince Regent; and in 1807 he escorted the Portugese royal family back from exile in Brazil. In 1815 he was in Brussels; and rode out to meet Wellington; who asked him to accept the surrender of Arras and Amiens. He moved to France to escape his debtors; and was also a leading anti-slavery campaigner. Frederick Hamilton; Archdeacon of Raphoe; and granddaughter of Lord Archibald Hamilton; (the son of the Duke Hamilton); a former Governor of Jamaica; Lord of the Admiralty and Governor of Greenwich Hospital.

32973611031Szlenker was not only a merchant but the the head of the merchants association in Warsaw. He was also a leading Polish Protestant and nationalist. In 1861 he was arrested in the Russian repression of Polish nationalist demonstrations following the end of the Crimean War. He was imprisoned in the Warsaw citadelle until 1862; then emigrated to France in 1863; and died in Nice in 1871.

Thompson married Philothea Perront Briggs; and they built a country retreat; Cottingham Castle in Yorkshire; He was an active lay Methodist lay preacher; and a supporter of Wilberforce and the Clapham sect. He was MP for Midhurst in Sussex from 1807-1818; but remained chairman of Wilberforce Smith's Bank and Wilberforce's merchant house in Hull. His son was Thomas Perronet Thompson; Governor of Sierre Leone. Thompson died in Paris on his first trip abroad; accompanying his grandchildren.
