He joined the Royal Navy as a surgeon's mate; and then the East India Company Medical Service; arriving in Bombay in 1782. He studied Hindustani (Urdu) and wrote the first dictionary in 1790; and an Urdu grammar in 1796. In 1801 he was appointed the first principal of Fort William College and professor of Persian and Hindustani. In 1804 he returned to Edinburgh; and began a career as a linen merchant; and later was briefly Professor of Persian at the EIC college in Hertford (Haileybury) in 1806. He then returned to Edinburgh and founded a banking firm; and joined several learned societies including the Royal Society of Edinburgh. After the failure of his business; he moved to London in 1817 and helped to found University College London (as the first Professor of Hindustani); the future Birkbeck College; and the London Oriental Institution. In his will he created the Gilchrist Educational Trust. |

He was also inspector of Naval Hospitals in Malta; Sicily; Gibraltar and Naples. He retired from the navy in 1819; and settled in Paris. He was the author of two books on tropical diseases. |

After serving in italy; he was sent back to Guadeloupe to quell the slave revolt and took command; and which led to his appointment as a full general. In 1806 he returned to Europe to fight in Germany; before moving to the Spanish front where he died in combat Guarroman in 1808. His name is inscribed on the west side of the Arc de Triomphe. |

Manuel Godoy y Alvarez de Faria was born to a poor family but rose to become the favourite of king Charles IV of Spain and especially of his wife; Marie-Louise of Parma who became his lover. He was largely responsible for the pro-French stance of Spain and he aligned the Spanish fleet with the French at the battle of Trafalgar in 1805. Godoy personally benefited from the Treaty of Fontainebleau in 1807 when the south of Portugal was awarded to Godoy and his family. Whenn Charles IV was overthrown in 1808 and Napoléon installed his own brother as king of Spain. Godoy went into exile in France; dying in comparative poverty in Paris; living on a pension from King Louis-Philippe of France. Son of a musician at the court chapel of Louis XVI; he was a pupil of the élite Ecole Polytechique in 1799; and commissioned in 1802. He distinguished himself by his bravery in Austria; Germany and Spain; participating in many of the great Napleonic victories; before his appointment to Napoléon's personal staff in 1811. He participated in the Russsian campaign; and saved Napoléon from an assasination attempt in Moscow in 1812; and was named baron as a result. He distinguished himself by his bravery once again in Germany and France from 1813-1814; and he quickly rallied to Napoléon during 'the Hundred Days'. He was one of the group of generals who surrounded Napoléon at the end of the battle of Waterloo; and accompanied him to Paris. Napoléon chose him to carry his request for exile to the Prince Regent in England; and when Gourgaud was refused a passage; Napoléon chose Gourgaud to accompany him into exile on St Helena. He wrote a journal of his time on St Helena which is now considered one of the most important sources on Napoléon. In 1840 was chosen to escort Napoléon's remains from St Helena to Paris. He married Françoise-Marthe Roederer; the daughter of Pierre-Louis Roederer who is also buried in Père Lachaise cemetery. However shortly afterwards his old mentor; the new King Louis XVIII; recalled him and appointed him as assistant commander of the château of Rambouillet until 1821. The king also raised him to aristocratic rank. |

He was commissioned in 1792 and sent to Pondichery; and was captured in 1793 by the British during the siege. When he was released; he was allowed to join his uncle who was Bishop of Adran and prime minister of the king of Cochinchine; and served as 'war mandarin' and commander of the engineers. Reclaimed by the British as a prisoner-of-war and destined for internment in England; he escaped after the capture of his prison ship and regained France; where he was appointed ADC to the new French commander in India; Decaen. He returned to India from 1803-1810; and escaped with the Decaen from the the siege of Mauritius; and continued to serve with Decaen in Spain in 1811-1813. In 1814 he was appointed general and head of the 2nd army of reservists in Paris. In January 1815 he was sent to Nimes; but he rallied to Napoléon during 'the Hundred Days'. He was charged with negociating with the Duc d'Angouleme; son of Louis XVIII; and subsequently survived an assasination attempt in Montpellier. He lived for several years on Mauritius after his retirement; and was the author of a Persian and Urdu dictionary and grammar. He was granted the honorary title of marshal in 1823. |
