Thomas Pennington (1762-1854); Rector (at the same time) of both Thorley in Hertfordshire; and of Kingsdown in Kent (of which he was patron). He was the nephew of the poet and letter-writer Mrs Elizabeth Carter who was an original member of the Blue-Stocking circle and a friend of Samuel Johnson; and who mentioned a Pennington nephew in her published correspondance with Mrs Montague. He had also been chaplain to the Countess of Bath (a friend of Mrs Carter); and a successful travel writer describing his tours of Europe. Her son was Thomas Sale Pennington; educated at Charterhouse and Trinity Coll.Oxon; who erected the tomb. A grand-daughter of Mary Sale and Thomas Pennington was the mother of the French WW1 general; Robert Nivelle. |

He became a Radical politician; and resisted the rise of the future Napoléon III; and he was on the same barricade as Alphonse Baudin when the latter was killed. Exiled in the UK under Napoléon III; he frequently saw his friend Victor Hugo. After the fall of Napoléon III; he returned to France and re-entered the French Parliament. In 1949; his remains were transferred to the Panthéon (the ultimate accolade in France) along with those of the first black person to receive the same honour; Félix Eboué. | |
