He escaped; and joined the Portugese army and was sent to Brazil in 1804; finally reaching the rank of general in 1814; and marshal in 1822. He was the Brazilian minister of war (in the independent empire) from 1821-1822; and from 1818-1829 when he was acquitted of excessive violence in suppressing a rebellion. In 1830 he was elected to the Brazilian Parliament. In the same year he returned to London; where his brother was a financier; and he remained in Europe until his death in Paris.

From 1796-1813 he was inspector-general of the health service; and introduced anti-viral vaccination in the army and investigated hygiene conditions on ships. He is commemorated in Paris by an avenue and a métro station; and almost any dish in French cuisine with a potato topping includes the term 'parmentier' (eg hachis parmentier; the equivalent of Shepherd's pie).

32961112361Mary Sale; who died in Amiens; was the only daughter of William Michael Sale of Bledlow Ridge in Buckinghamshire; and Martha Pennington of Canterbury. She was the grand-daughter of George Sale; a distinguished English barrister and Orientalist who was the first person to translate the Koran into English; and his French Hugenot wife; Marianne d'Argent. Her uncle George Sale was a fellow of New Coll. Oxon; and her father and another uncle were talented writers. Mary Sale married in 1789 the Rev. Thomas Pennington (1762-1854); Rector (at the same time) of both Thorley in Hertfordshire; and of Kingsdown in Kent (of which he was patron). He was the nephew of the poet and letter-writer Mrs Elizabeth Carter who was an original member of the Blue-Stocking circle and a friend of Samuel Johnson; and who mentioned a Pennington nephew in her published correspondance with Mrs Montague. He had also been chaplain to the Countess of Bath (a friend of Mrs Carter); and a successful travel writer describing his tours of Europe. Her son was Thomas Sale Pennington; educated at Charterhouse and Trinity Coll.Oxon; who erected the tomb. A grand-daughter of Mary Sale and Thomas Pennington was the mother of the French WW1 general; Robert Nivelle.

Emma Pearsall Regnault1908 Second wife of Jacques Regnault (1880). Daughter of the English industrialist and inventor; Evan Leigh. He was a cotton manufacturer from Lancarshire who later invented the twin screw system used for merchant and Royal Navy steam ships. He was also an author and pamphleteer; and proposed a method of running trains across the straits of Dover. She died at 'Applecarth' in Birkenhead.

With another brother; Samson; he began business in France and unsuccessfully bid to finance French efforts in 1823 against the Spanish constitutionalists whom he secretly supported. In 1825 Jacob and Samson were heavily criticsed for mismanaging a loan to Greek nationalist rebels. He married Abigail Levy; and his eldest son was John Lewis Ricardo; member of the London Stock Exchange; author; and MP for Stoke on Trent 1841-1862.

He took part in the Egyptian campaign; and commanded the artillery at the battle of Aboukir. He was promoted to brigadier-general in 1807; and served with dsitinction in Spain; and was promoted to Lt.General in 1813. In 1815 he rallied to Napoléon; but he remained in favour under the Bourbon monarchy. His name is inscribed on the south side of the Arc de Triomphe.

In France he became a journalist and campaigned for the abolition of slavery; which he achieved in France and the French empire in 1848. He became a Radical politician; and resisted the rise of the future Napoléon III; and he was on the same barricade as Alphonse Baudin when the latter was killed. Exiled in the UK under Napoléon III; he frequently saw his friend Victor Hugo. After the fall of Napoléon III; he returned to France and re-entered the French Parliament. In 1949; his remains were transferred to the Panthéon (the ultimate accolade in France) along with those of the first black person to receive the same honour; Félix Eboué.

3296551152Initially an infantry instructor in 1759; he served in the Seven Years War; and by 1792 had attained the rank of colonel. He was dismissed from the army; but re-joined as a simple soldier and reached the rank of general in 1795. From 1796-99 he served in Italy; and was nicknamed the Italian virgin for his honest character. Napoléon appointed him as a senator; and granted him the honorary title of marshal in 1804; and in 1808 he was appointed Governor of the Invalides militairy hospital and a count of the empire. The following year he was appointed commander of the National Guard. He rallied to Napoléon in 1815; but recovered his honorary title of marshal in 1819.

Joseph Archimede lived in the rue St Florentin; by the place de la Concorde; and was a leading lawyer and registrar of the first circumscription of the Seine département. In 1837 he divorced his wife; Chrostine Lemoine; for infidelity with the author Maximilien Perrin.
