The officers of the 14th regt. Place this monumental tablet as a record of their affection and esteem for a lamented fellow soldier and friend.

7CampbellJohn Campbellid: 119652557752121Who served through the first Burmese War under his distinguished father. He commanded the 36th regt. For 14 years and as brigadier-general fought at Alma and at Inkerman. He fell while gallantly leading on at the assault of the Redan 18th June. His remains were laid in the cemetery on Cathcart's Hill – near Sebastopool. His widow dedicates this tablet near the remains of his revered parents to the memory of a beloved husband. A monument has also been erected in Winchester Cathedral by the 38th regt. In which he served for 33 years “as a testimony of respect; sincere affection and esteem.”

Entered Diplomatic Service; being attached to Madrid; Stockholm; Florence and finally; in 1816; to Berlin where he served until 1825. Married 3rd July 1817; in Berlin. They were the parents of 5 sons and 6 daughters. He succeeded as 17th Earl of Morton on 17th July 1827 on the death of his cousin the 16th Earl. Inherited the family sea of Dalmahoy House; to the west of Edinburgh. Died on 31st March at his London home.

James Strange James Charles Stuart was the eldest son. Joined the Madras establishment of the Honourable East India Company. Married his first wife whilst on leave and took her back to India; where she died leaving a 6 year old daughter. James went on a voyage of exploration from India to the north-west coast of America. Lost his money; but by the time he retired in 1797 he had made a fortune. Became a banker in London and an M.P. Married for the second time on 18th December 1798. James' bank failed and he was left penniless; so again joined the H.E.I.C and took his new wife there in 1805. He made another fortune and left … 1816. They were the parents of two daughters and lived at No.7 Ainslie Place. Died on 6th October at Airth Castle; Stirlingshire. Interred in the south-east corner of the top part of the east burial ground.

15ForbesGeorge Forbes67id: 118792557533911Youngest son. A respected banker in Edinburgh. Lived at West Coates House 1832-50. Took a prominent interest in the building of St. John's and was a Vestryman from 1824-57. He was a member of the Committee for the monument to Sir Walter Scott in Princes Street. To an accomplished mind; and dignified presence; combined with much affability of manner; he united great benevolence of disposition. Married on 8th February 1819; to his cousin. They were the parents of 9 sons and 2 daughters. George died 26th September at Moniack Castle just outside Inverness. Interred in north west corner of top section of East Burial Ground. Window erected in 1858 by widow and family.
Charles Hay Forbes53 Third son. Became a banker in Edinburgh 1830-38; then in Glasgow 1838-44. Returned to Edinburgh 1844-46. Lived in Rugby; Warwickshire; 1848-53. Returned again to Edinburgh in 1853 and purchased Canaan Park; off the Grange Loan (now part of Atlie Ainslie Hospital.) Married 5th July 1833 to his cousin; 3rd daughter of the 15th chief of Glengarry. Her uncle; Col. James MacDonnell; was famous for his exploit in closing the gates at the farmhouse at Hougoument; when the French had almost burst into the yard; at the Battle of Waterloo; in 1815. They were the parents of 4 sons and 5 daughters. The eldest son inherited his uncle's baronetcy whilst living in New Zealand; where his descendants still live. Charles died 5th November; at Canaan Park and is interred in South Burial Ground. Window was erected to the memory of Charles by his wife and seven surviving children in July 1860
William Forbes53 Eldest son; 7th Baronet. Famous banker in Edinburgh from 1795 until his death. The family bank; of Sir William Forbes and Co. did much to provide loans and in securing capital for much of the building of Edinburgh New Town. A friend of Sir. Walter Scott; and was nominated chairman of the Trustees of the creditors when Sir Walter faced financial ruin in 1826. He was one of the seven original Trustees of St John's; entrusted with the task of purchasing the ground and raising the capital to build the church. In fact he was the largest shareholder. Married 19th January 1797; . She was Sir Walter's first love. They were the parents of 4 sons and 2 daughters. William died 24th October at Colinton and is interred with his wife in Greyfriars. GPR. Colin MacKenzie60 Of Portmore. Third and eldest son. Entered the legal profession and was a principal clerk of Session 1804-28. Deputy Keeper of the Signet 1820-8. A friend of Sir Walter Scott. One of the seven original Trustees of the church; entrusted with the task of purchasing the grounds and raising the capital to build the church. Married 13th May 1803. They were the parents of 9 sons and 6 daughters. Colin died on 16th September; 1830. He and his wife are both interred in Greyfriars churchyard in an enclosure on South Wall. GPR grave ref. 138309
