Volunteers Profile: Peter Moon
This is a profile of Peter Moon, a Gravestone Photographic Resource volunteer.
A bit about Peter Moon
I worked as a chemist and chemical engineer for ICI, mainly at Billingham and Wilton on Teesside, until I was made redundant at the age of 58. I then worked for a newly established microfilming company for five years as Technical Manager, following which I worked privately as a consultant until I finally retired at the age of 70.
My wife and I have three sons who live in Kettering, Normandy and New Hampshire, and they and their families enrich our lives.

Why did you become a volunteer?
Since retiring, in researching my family history I became very interested in gravestones and their manufacture, probably stimulated by the inherited genes from my great grandfather who was a stonemason.
With my allied and longstanding interest in the census, computing and photography, I wrote a number of local history books on towns in Cornwall and east Essex, in which gravestone photography was a major component.
More recently I have written "Grave Concerns" and "In Loving Memory: The Craft of the Monumental Mason" which exemplify my deep and continuing interest in gravestones, their production methods, fashion changes, deterioration and recording.
How long have you been a volunteer?
Since 2008.
