Introduction

This page contains a list of all the entries for the maiden name MAYES that are held within the Gravestone Photographic Resource online database. It is quite likely that there are also entries available for alternative spellings of this name. It is very easy for you to check to see if there are any alternative spellings: you just need to look at the page that shows all the names listed under the starting letter (M in this case) of the maiden name you are interested in.

If you click on a particular name or GPR reference number above you will see details of what information is held for that particular person. If there is an image available then you will be able to order a free copy of it.

If you click on a particular church, parish or town name above then you will see details of all the grave monument images that are available for that particular location.

Please note that all ages and dates of birth in red have been calculated and are probably not on the monument.

You should treat the calculated dates of birth with caution as the ages given on monuments are often inaccurate. The dates and ages on many monuments are also often hard to read. It is therefore important to use the dates as guides as they may be incorrect.

The same person may appear many times in the above list. This is because a person can easily be listed on many different monuments. For instance, a person could be listed on their own grave as well as on the gravestone monuments of their children and their spouse. Occasionally names will be duplicated because the monument has in error been photographed and indexed twice.

Where a relationship is shown as unknown, this usually means that parts of the monument are illegible and relationship cannot be read.

Where no relationship is given this means that this is normally the first name on the monument. All the relationships on any particular monument relate to this first named individual.

In most cases images are available. However sometimes they will unavailable. Often this is because although images have been taken they were unfortunately lost when the resource suffered a major computer fault and not all the images could be recovered.

Dear Sean Codd:Thank you for taking the time to share your phrgptoaoh, Arthur Tress’s quote, and your brand. Overall, I find your image worthy of a slow read, it is visually pleasing. While the content is disturbing the aesthetics are fascinating. Is your intent to make your audience feel uneasy? If so, you have succeeded. Your phrgptoaoh marks a deceive moment between life and deaf. The main visual point of attention, which is the gun in the mouth, is obscured by the surrounding visual clutter. The main concept of the image, death, is in itself an obscure concept. Well done. It is safe to say that I feel constrained when looking at this phrgptoaoh. The highlights in the middle ground remind me of plastic. This plastic near his head reminds me of being suffocated, something I fear. Being suffocated is a thought I would like to escape as fast as possible. Is your image deceptive? The background, middle ground, and foreground, play a trick on the eye… they blend together making them difficult to decipher. Do I see an overlay of layers? This technique, when apparent, is traditionally deceiving, it increases the rhythmic pattern of the eye; the reader is invited to re-read the image until all the layers are identified. All of your layers can not be identified. I cannot figure out where his head ends and the painting of the church begins. You have deceived me.Best regards, Jason Cory Clay

James Mayes - Rattlesden
Thanks for your prompt reply. It helps my young grandson who now lives in Australia with his family background. Next time he is in the UK I will take him to Rattlesden as James Mayes is his GGGGrandfather. I know the family lived in the Woolpit/Rattleden area and married into the Bird family through my Grandmother, Blanche Amelia whose husband (Oliver) and father both travelled to Australia in their early years before returning to Suffolk.
