Alexander (Sandy) was the second son of Edward Bacheler Russell and Mary Dorothea his second wife. With his first wife, Caroline, Sandy had three children, Bridget Mary Barclay Russell, George Christopher (Kit) Barclay Russell and Roger Barclay Russell. He was an artist who promoted art as a subject of importance in schools that lead to a country-wide movement and the strong interest in art that exists in schools now.
