Kieffer began his career as an interpreter for the revolutionary committees; and was attached to the French Embassy in Constantinople in 1796; where he was imprisoned during Napoleon's invasion of Egypt. From 1818-1829 he was interpreter for oriental languages for king Louis XVIII. He was also Vice-President of the Asiatic Society; and author of a Franco-Turkish dictionary. He was a leading French Protestant Revivalist.
