He distinguished himself by his bravery in Austria; Germany and Spain; participating in many of the great Napleonic victories; before his appointment to Napoléon's personal staff in 1811. He participated in the Russsian campaign; and saved Napoléon from an assasination attempt in Moscow in 1812; and was named baron as a result. He distinguished himself by his bravery once again in Germany and France from 1813-1814; and he quickly rallied to Napoléon during 'the Hundred Days'. He was one of the group of generals who surrounded Napoléon at the end of the battle of Waterloo; and accompanied him to Paris. Napoléon chose him to carry his request for exile to the Prince Regent in England; and when Gourgaud was refused a passage; Napoléon chose Gourgaud to accompany him into exile on St Helena.
