Of Polish -Lithaunian aristocratic descent; she met Balzac for the first time in 1833 when she was already the wife of the Count Hanski. Following the count's death in 1841; and after a prolonged courtship and friendship; she married Balzac in May 1850 in the Ukraine; 6 months before his death. Her brother was Henry Rzewuski; a Polish author who promoted the works of Sir Walter Scott in Poland. After Balzac's death; she was linked to the French writer Jules Champfleury and lived with the French artist Jean Gigoux.
