This inscription is upside down on the back of the gravestone. Boyd was born in Penninghame; Wigtown; Scotland and emigrated to New South Wales in Australia where he was a successful merchant. He inherited Merton Hall in Wigtownshire; and also had fashionable addresses in London and in Paris at 33; avenue des Champs-Elysées. He married his wife Margaret in the British Embassy in Florence in 1841.
