William Britton was actually born in 1842 so this is a case where the age on the stone is slightly inaccurate. He and his wife ran a pub (I think it was called The Rose)in Pickering which she continued to run on her own after his death. They had no children of their own but seem to have brought up one of his nieces as their own child following the death of her mother (his sister).
