Thomas Smith was born in Skinningrove, baptised 4 August 1816 at Brotton, parents George Smith a farmer and Johanna Smith nee Heselton or Heseltine. He married Isabella Knaggs on 3rd May 1836 at this Church of St Mary's West Acklam. He was already living in the area as the family had moved to Newport. He and Isabel lived in Acklam all their married lives and appear in all censuses from 1841 through 1881 for Isabel and 1891 for Thomas. They had at least 6 children. Thomas worked locally, probably for the Acklam Hall estate, as a farm labourer and as a cowman.
