Acheson Quintin Dick Thompson was born on 22 October 1806 in Newry, County Down, Ireland, and was the son of Quintin Dick Thompson (1785-1809) and Mary Ann Raffles (1789-1837, sister to Stamford Raffles, the founder of Singapore). He married Isabella Madden, (1803-1875, daughter of the Reverend Michael Dodgson Madden (1777-1809) and his wife Frances Hamilton (1775-1862) on 21 September 1837.
