Royal Canadian Air Force Charles Leonard Tregerthen Sawle was born 29 January 1918 in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. He was the son of Alexander Leonard Sawle and Clara Thomson. He attended primary and secondary school in Edmonton and then the Royal Military College in Kingston, Ontario from September 1937 to December 1939. On 5 May 1944 he married Margaret Elva Hickling in Brandon, Manitoba, Canada. They had two sons: Douglas Alexander and George Leonard Tregerthen. Both Charles and his elder brother, Clarence North Bosustow Sawle were pilots. North, as he was known, was first a bush pilot in Canada's north and then flew for Canadian Pacific Air Lines. North died 3 May 1953 when the CPA de Havilland Comet on which he was co-pilot crashed on takeoff in Karachi ,Pakistan. Some information excerpted from the Canadian Virtual War Memorial
