Charles was one of four children of Charles Elliott (1776-1856) and Alicia Boileau de Castelnau (1779-1851), a Huguenot. His grandfather, another Charles (1751-1832) was a renowned cabinetmaker, who reputed came to London with a shilling in his pocket and retired to Brighton with £250,000. The family was subsequently involved in India. Charles Boileau Elliott was the top of his class at Haileybury College. The Elliotts are descended from the Borders family of Larriston.
