Morton was at one time Chancellor under Mary Queen of Scots but he espoused the cause of the Reformers and strongly supported alliance with Protestant England rather than with Catholic France Regent of Scotland from 1572 to 1578 he tried to rebuild episcopacy on the basis of Knoxs system of superintendents His downfall was brought about the proFrench Duke of Lennox Beheaded by the Maiden a device similar to the later guillotine – his body was buried in the kirkyard while his head was fixed to the City Gate A small pillar with the letters J E M marks the grave copying the wooden markers which were in use at the time
