Szlenker was not only a merchant but the the head of the merchants association in Warsaw. He was also a leading Polish Protestant and nationalist. In 1861 he was arrested in the Russian repression of Polish nationalist demonstrations following the end of the Crimean War. He was imprisoned in the Warsaw citadelle until 1862; then emigrated to France in 1863; and died in Nice in 1871.
