Vergez was born in the Pyrenees. He had a varied career; and was officially retired from the army on several occasions but was frequently recalled. He joined the army in 1778; and was a member of the National Guard in 1789 in Paris. From 1797-1801 he served in Italy; and then in Austria; Prussia and Poland. He was seriously wounded at the battle of Auerstadt and was promoted to general; and baron. He returned to Italy but then joined the Spanish front from 1808-1810; before his second retirement in 1811. He was recalled again in 1813 and served in Germany and France until his third forced retirement in 1814. In the same year he was called out of retirement once again to take charge of the defence of Paris during 'the Hundred Days'; remaining loyal to the restored Bourbon régime. He was appointed an honorary Lieutenant-General in 1825.
