The follow note is stored against John Gilchrist record:
John Borthwick Gilchrist was born in Edinburgh; and trained at George Heriot's Hospital. He joined the Royal Navy as a surgeon's mate; and then the East India Company Medical Service; arriving in Bombay in 1782. He studied Hindustani (Urdu) and wrote the first dictionary in 1790; and an Urdu grammar in 1796. In 1801 he was appointed the first principal of Fort William College and professor of Persian and Hindustani. In 1804 he returned to Edinburgh; and began a career as a linen merchant; and later was briefly Professor of Persian at the EIC college in Hertford (Haileybury) in 1806. He then returned to Edinburgh and founded a banking firm; and joined several learned societies including the Royal Society of Edinburgh. After the failure of his business; he moved to London in 1817 and helped to found University College London (as the first Professor of Hindustani); the future Birkbeck College; and the London Oriental Institution. In his will he created the Gilchrist Educational Trust.
