Born the comte de Sainte-Maime; by the age of 19 he was already colonel of an infantry regiment. He served with the French forces in the American War of Independence; including the siege of Yorktown in 1781. In the same year he became known as the comte de Muy. Following the American campaign; he held republican views and embraced the French revolutionary cause; and was promoted to lieutenant-general in 1792. He served in Brittany; the Pyrenees; and the Alps; before being named commander of French forces in India; an order which was cancelled at the last moment when he was asked to take command of an army in the south of France. He continued to serve extensively in France; Germany and Egypt; and in 1806 he was appointed governor-general of Silesia. In 1808 Napoléon appointed him a baron of the empire; and he later sought to rally to Napoléon during 'the Hundred Days'; but Napoléon declined his offer. Louis XVIII nonetheless honoured him at the restoration; and he ended his career as an esteemed and patriotic politician.
