Commissioned in 1792; he distinguished himself the following year at the siege of Toulon. He served in Germany; Austria; Prussia; Poland and Russia; and fought at the battles of Austerlitz; Eylau and Wagram. In 1814 he was ordered into semi-retirement; and promoted to lieutenant-general in 1815.
