Born in Pondichery in the French colonies of India; his father was the presentor of ambassadors to the brother of Louis XVI. De Bruno joined the army in 1793; and distinguished himself in the Italian campaigns. In 1806 he became the ADC to Louis Bonaparte; brother of the emperor; and king of Holland. In 1810 he was appointed general in the French army; and distinguished himself again at the battle of Borodino. Taken prisoner at the battle of Dresden; Napoléon reproached him for his inattention. He remained a prisoner of war from 1813-1814. He rallied to Napoléon during 'the Hundred Days'; but continued in regional command posts during the Bourbon restoration after Waterloo.
