From 'The Scottish Nation; by William Anderson; published 1863: The Hon. Basil Cochrane; the sixth son [of the 8th Earl of Dundonald]; was placed on the Madras civil establishment in 1769; and on his return to Britain in May 1807 he purchased the barony of Auchterarder in Perthshire. He published the following works; ‘An Improvement in the Mode of Administering the Vapour Bath; and in the Apparatus connected with it; with Plans and Estimates of fixed and Portable Baths; for Hospitals and Private Houses; and some Practical Suggestions on the Efficacy of Vapour in Application to Various Diseases in the Human Frame; and as it may be beneficial to the Veterinary Art of Medicine.’ He married Caroline Gosling.
