James Law was born in Castle Conyngham in Donegal; Ireland; on the estate of the Marquess Conyngham. He joined the East India Company; and was a writer in 1797; and later worked in the EIC Civil Service in Bombay. He applied for a position of director of the company. In 1808 he was the treasurer of the Bombay memorial subscription fund for the English naval hero; Captain George Nicholas Hardinge RN; who died fighting (victoriously) against the French in the Indian Ocean.
