Born in Madeira but educated in England; he fought against Napoléons' navy and was captured. He escaped; and joined the Portugese army and was sent to Brazil in 1804; finally reaching the rank of general in 1814; and marshal in 1822. He was the Brazilian minister of war (in the independent empire) from 1821-1822; and from 1818-1829 when he was acquitted of excessive violence in suppressing a rebellion. In 1830 he was elected to the Brazilian Parliament. In the same year he returned to London; where his brother was a financier; and he remained in Europe until his death in Paris.
