The illegitimate son of the 1st Duke of Buckingham and Chandos; under the patronage of Lord Palmerston he joined the British Diplomatic Corps but eventaully resigned dure to his incompetence. He became a journalist; but his acerbic wit and anti-aristocratic tone led to him being horse-whipped in London by Lord Carrington. Accused of perjruy; he fled London for France with his Spanish wife; from whom he assumed the title of Comte de Rethel d'Aragon. He became the Paris correspondant of a number of English magazines; and published a scandalous novel; 'Young Brown or the law of inheritance'; based on his own life.
