Born County Cavan, Ireland in 1827, the son of James Addy. Joined Royal Irish Constabulary on 10 November 1846 aged 19. Registration number 7241, he was posted to the Limerick Depot, then in March 1847 to Carlow, and later to County Fermanagh where he met his future wife; they were married on 25 August 1852 at Cleenish East. On 1 December 1852, he was posted to Wicklow. In April 1853, he resigned to emigrate to Yorkshire where he pursued a career as a policeman, ending up as a sergeant. Based respectively at Baildon, Wadworth and Batley, he retired to Ribson, Wetherby where he died.
