William Hill, son of Edward & Elizabeth Hill was born in Clifford, and baptised in Bramham on 30 October 1815. He had started his working life as a farm worker, but joined the police force soon after his first son Walter was born. He and Elizabeth moved to Cottingham, near Hull where their second child, William, was born in 1850, and by the end of March 1851, William, Elizabeth, and their 2 boys were living in Welton, where William was a police constable. By 1858, when Marcia was born, the family had moved to Sutton (near Hull) and by 1861 the family had moved again, this time to North Newbald, where William was a grocer and linen draper. By 1871 he had returned to Bramham, and was again working as an agricultural labourer
