Friend Portman was born in the Kimberworth area. His father was James 1837-1916, he married Harriet Satterfit in 1865 this was Friend's mother 1846-1904. His father had been married before to Mary Pilley 1839-1863. He had seven brothers and one sister, also a step sister.
