Eveline (Effie to her parents; Eve to Bill) was born in Port Sunlight, the elder of two daughters to Herbert Owen Rishworth and Ida Booth. Eve swam for her school (breaststroke), played the piano, loved dancing, the theatre and the countryside. She had dreamt of reading French at university and going to France, neither ambition coming to fruition. Instead she became a comptometer operator for Unilever (the place where her relatives worked). About 1941 she was called up into the ATS. She spent the war working in the Army pay office in Manchester, where she met Bill, in 1945.
