William's full name was William Carter Reeves, the Carter for his paternal grandmother. He was born in Failsworth to Abraham Reeves and Polly Morgan. He had one sibling, a brother, Gerald George Reeves, 1918-1943. Bill (as he was known) joined the RA in late 1931, served in India before the war and then in Belgium & France (at Dunquerque) and then in the North African Campaign until its end, when he was sent home seriously ill. He worked as a Herdsman thereafter on different farms around England, the loss of his military career unsettling him permanently. He and Eveline (Eve) married in 1947. They had three surviving children.
