Henry James Hawyes, born Paddington 31 July 1894, served as a stoker on the battleship HMS Africa from 25 July 1915 to 7 Nov 1918 in the North Sea, at Scapa Flow, in the Channel, Adriatic and south Atlantic. She escorted convoys between South Africa and Sierra Leone, where in September 1918 she was struck by the Spanish Flu pandemic, and out of less than 800 crew, 476 fell ill, of whom 52 died. Henry survived, was demobbed in Dec 1919 and served in the Royal Fleet Reserve until 1925. In 1944 he married Doris Winifred Skinner and they lived latterly at Peacehaven, where he died in 1954 and Doris in 1981.
