Henry Charles Mylne

During the First World War he was Wokingham’s War Mayor, giving all his time to recruiting tribunal work, food production and war savings in addition to his civic duties. During the ceremonies he was presented with a silver tray and the Mayoress received a silver cake basket in recognition of their services. A native of Edinburgb, Henry and his wife and daughter came to Wokingham at the beginning of the century. The family at first resided in Field House in Gipsy Lane and later in Staverton at 25, Murdoch Road. Henry was a member of the Wokingham urban sub-committee; churchwarden of All saints’ church for nearly seventeen years and one of the governors of the Royal Berkshire Hospital in Reading. In the early part of September !919, he went to Edinburgh for a much needed rest after his labours for town and council. But it was soon evident that he had been under greater strain than had been imagined and he died in that year on the 21st October. Reasons why the image for this memorial was requested

I live in Wokingham, Berkshire where Henry Mylne was mayor during WW1. and who did much for the war effort. I am helping the town council compile information about him for an exhibition to be held in the town hall later this year.
