This is/was Edward Swinnock, millwright and engineer of Stoke, Guildford.[Norton Villa, Austen Road, Guildford] He was originally from Maidstone, Kent and married a Phoebe Norton Hobbs on 9 Dec 1829 in Parish Chapel, St Pancras Camden, England. He had a will and his estate amounted to £1,807-12s-07d. The couple had no children but the will was proved by George Swinnock of Bower Street, Gent., from Maidstone (brother); Amelia Swinnock of Austen Road (niece) and Edward Daniel Swinnock of High Street, Chatham, confectioner, nephew. Probate: 10 Apr 1891. He was my first cousin 4x removed. The Swinnocks of Maidstone are an interesting family and my forebears go back to the 1500s...I'm lucky that the records are so good for the family. There are a couple of Mayors and Jurats from the Swinnock line with Robert Swinnock (1650-1700) the last Swinnock Mayor of Maidstone. They did, however, come down in the world after the mid-1700s on my own direct line...too much womanising and gambling on a paper-making scheme that came to nought, I'm afraid. Later my branch of the Swinnocks were barge-masters and did better for themselves by dint of hard work. My connection with the Swinnocks ended when my G G Grandmother Lavinia Swinnock married a John Barfoot (also a bargeman/waterman) of Maidstone. Hope that helps any prospective cousins!!
